Nikos Kazantzakis Museum
The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum, founded in 1983 in Myrtia, Heraklion, Crete, celebrates the life and legacy of the world-renowned author Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1957).
Best known for his novels Zorba the Greek (1946), The Greek Passion (1948), Freedom or Death (1950), The Last Temptation of Christ (1951), and his semi-autobiographical Report to Greco (1961), Kazantzakis’ works have crossed borders, have been translated and published in over 50 countries, and adapted for theatre, cinema, radio, and television.
Among his many accolades, he served as president of the Hellenic Literary Society, received the International Peace Award in 1956, and was a Nobel Prize nominee for Literature.
To broaden Kazantzakis’ influence, the Museum aims to launch a Museum Kit designed for Primary, Middle and High schools in Greece and Greek schools abroad.
The design is all about a ‘past meets present’ approach.
Kazantzakis' work is timeless, so we set out to present his legacy in a way that would appeal to young audiences. We focused on a design adaptable to various applications, materials and volumes.
The museum kit itself merges the essence of a book and a suitcase, held together with a leather belt reminiscent of how children used to carry their schoolbooks in the mid-20th century. Every dimension of this "suitcase" was carefully researched and tailored to fit its contents.
The heart of the kit is a series of five themed guides, each designed to explore different facets of Kazantzakis: The Writer, The Human, The Cretan, The Traveller, and The Intellectual. These guides come in various shapes and feature unique design elements.
We also used a color-coding system to bring clarity and focus to each theme.
The kit’s physical materials—wood, fabric, and paper—were thoughtfully selected to create a sense of nostalgia and authenticity. Combined with replicas of the author’s personal items, students are invited to step into Kazantzakis’ world.
